I know nothing about football, but I look forward to watching the halftime Super Bowl performance every year. Did you know the average budget is $10 million dollars and the artists aren’t even paid by the Super Bowl to perform?! INSANE! Artists really do go ALL out every single year. I’m even more excited this year to have our homeboy, The Weeknd represent Canada at America’s biggest event (arguably bigger than the presidential inauguration. Fact check? No thanks). He told Billboard that he is spending $7 million dollars of his own money to make the performance extra special.
“We've been really focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and we want to do that with the Super Bowl."
That being said, here is a list of my favourite halftime performances at the Super Bowl in the previous years (that I actually watched and was VERY impressed with):
3. Beyoncé (2016)
FANS. And yes, I’m talking about the objects, not her support system. Bey’s hair was flying perfectly in each shot. She made us embrace our inner divas. The female power was in full FORCE. I was cheering and dancing throughout the entire thing (and gushing over her beautiful legs)
She choose to make a major political statement during "Formation" in support of the Black Lives Matter movement to protest anti-police and anti-racism. The outfits that B and her backup dancers were wearing was a tribute to the Black Panther Party. It caused a lot of controversy that is brought up every year during Super Bowl season.
Oh yeah, I totally forgot that Bruno Mars and Coldplay also shared the stage…. Great vocals, but sorry, Queen B stole the entire show!
2. Shakira/Jennifer Lopez (2020)
This performance really shook 2020 to it’s CORE. Memes and videos of their performance DOMINATED the internet.

1. Lady Gaga (2017)
My favourite part of this performance was knowing that a bunch of conservative men were watching an LGBTQ+ artist perform at the biggest male dominant sport in the states. So much pressure was put on Mother Monster herself, but she SLAYED every single moment. From flying over the crowd, to hundred of drones creating epic visuals, she changed the “game” for half time performances.
